Beetham Tower, Manchester

Located on Deansgate, it’s the tallest building in Manchester. (169 m.)

At least at the time of the writing. You never know when this might change with all this construction going on in this city–so that it doesn’t look like I’m spreading some fake news here.

It is still fairly new, only completed in 2006. Apparently it divides opinions, but I like it. I think it’s cool to have an iconic skyscraper in the city. Thin and sleek, reminds me of today’s tech gadgets.

The view from the top floor must be something to kill for!

The old and the new:

This blog needs more of Manchester red brick architecture, methinks.

Gloomscapes #5

Welcome to Number Five of my Gloomscapes series, today I present to you a Building That Used To Be:

half-demolished building1

Look closer:

half-demolished building3

Maybe it used to be a rebels’ base. Or Opposition’s headquarters. Whatever it was, it is no more.

These photographs are brand new, only taken yesterday. I never expected to come across a half-demolished building, I had no idea it was there!

Random and Weird Phone Shots – Black Pant(her)

What are you wearing today? Chances are, if you work in a standard office:

blackpanther

Obviously, it’s a cinema ticket for Black Panther (which I saw a week ago, but it was too late to post it on that day and dammit, I said Random and Weird Phone Shots are a Thursday thing). See what I have become? This shit post proves I have completely lost it.

Black Panther might be a candidate for the movie of the year and it’s only February. I just want to mention something that occurs, well, something he says at the end, so here is when I say spoiler, if you haven’t seen it and want to–stop reading now.

In the first post-credits scene T’Challa (aka Black Panther) speaks at the United Nations and has this to say–paraphrasing here, so it’s not 100% exact: “Wise man builds bridges, fool builds barriers.”

I am in agreement, Your Highness.

Now, let’s get hyped for Infinity War!

Bratislava Castle

So I was scrolling through my blog the other day and saw a post where I said I should post pictures of Bratislava Castle one of these days. The post was from July 2016. I don’t know if the present day counts as “one of these days” in relation to July 2016, but I guess late is better than never.

Bratislava Castle 1

These were taken with my old compact Fujifilm. I’ve not actually been to Bratislava since I got the Canon.

Bratislava Castle 2

The castle has a long history; there have been settlements of sorts ever since any people lived in this part of the world. It has been converted numerous times, at one point even burned down. Here’s the Wikipedia article.

Bratislava castle hill

The castle is on a hill as well–here you see the towers just poking out from the trees.

For all other pics of my hometown, check out my Bratislava tag.

And if you want to see more castles, here’s my Pinterest board.

To blog or not to blog?

As I bring my blog back to life, aside from my Gloomscapes series, I still intend to be posting nice things. There was a time in the second half of 2017 when I wasn’t sure what to do with the blog, I felt it lost direction. Even the Weekly Photo Challenge wasn’t doing anything for me.

Well, not only have I got over that, I’m more excited than ever about blog and can’t wait to post more!

Some Song

One the topic of castles on hills:

Gloomscapes #4

In this week’s Gloomscapes entry, I give you some barbed wires.

barbed wire 4

Dystopian fiction often features prisons or some kind of locked environment.

barbed wire 3

You are guilty of harbouring negative thoughts about The State/The Empire/Our Almighty Leader/The Big Brother.

#KeepOnGloomin’

Okay, if you go through my blog, you’ll notice that I have already posted both of these places, but from different angles–in my post Corner, which was a Weekly Photo Challenge entry. I completely forgot about Corner and only realised it when I saw the pics in my blog folder. The Corner photos would have been perfect for Gloomscapes but that was long before I ever thought of the series.

Gloomscapes #3

What’s up everyone, here is Number Three in my Gloomscapes series.

wasteland 1

It used to be a lively neighbourhood, with families and dogs and greenery… now all that’s left is a wasteland.

There is a lot I like about this photograph: the concrete building, the brick wall, the leafless trees (it was March), the barrier things, the dull sky. It came out pretty well, if I say so myself! 🙂

‘Til next Sunday.

Gloomscapes #2

After last week’s introductory post (or, if we’re using TV show terms, a pilot), here I am again with a second entry in my new series Gloomscapes.

backroad to doomstown

Let me walk you down this road to Gloomsville… where the sky is grey and all creatures kill…

My brother commented that without the double yellow lines, the place would resemble a forced labour camp. So I removed the lines in Photoshop Elements and here’s the result:

backroad w.out lines

It does look more menacing, doesn’t it, I suppose because yellow is such a lively colour.

#KeepOnGloomin’

I’ll be back next Sunday with another instalment, in the meantime you can check out my new Gloomscapes Pinterest board.

Note: I decided to title my posts in this series as just numbers, it’s simple and neat and to be very honest, I’m not sure if I could come up with a catchy title every week. I’ve got loads of pictures and not many words.

Random and Weird Phone Shots Is Back

Yeah, it’s been a while. Five months since the last RAWPS post–hoo, I didn’t realise it really.

I saw this sign outside the Scribbler shop in Manchester. If you’re not familiar with this retailer, they sell cards, hence the Valentine’s Day thing.

kanye to kanye

Actually, it’s not that stupid. You should love yourself most of all.

You can also date your own self if you want. Which I’m kinda doing.

Bonus

It’s been 18 months since the first Random and Weird Phone Shot entry so here’s an updated pic. The trainers are still hanging there. They survived many a stormy weather, they’ll probably still be there after the world ends.

But that is a different story altogether.
